Event Report
Gilman Springs Fun Fly and Swap Meet
By Oscar Weingart
The Gilman Springs RC Flyers held this event on June 30, to celebrate the upcoming Independence Day holiday. Many RRCC members attended. Some of these, including me, are members of both clubs. There were lots of planes, engines and radios for sale, and lots of flying on the Gilman 600 ft. paved runway. A couple of high points were exhibition aerobatics by a full-scale Extra and a full-scale AT-6. This type of exciting full-scale show has occurred at the last three events I have attended. RRCC might want to look into possibilities for this type of diversion at some of our events.
Carl Lindou put on his usual 3D flying show with his Extra model, and there were model helicopter aerobatics as well. We flew the 1/3 Scale Ercoupe twice, including showing and explaining a typical Scale Masters competition flight. The Coupe won the award for the Best Civilian model. Models had to fly to compete for these awards, which were also given for Best WWI, Best WWII, Best Sport and Best Jet.
The Gilman Club charged no entry fee, but encouraged the purchase of their yummy hot dogs and hamburgers, and tickets for their well-stocked raffle. Mystic Lake, adjacent to the field, was available for float flying, however, the shoreline has retreated rather far from the runway, and nobody that I am aware of actually flew off the water. My compliments to the Gilman Springs RC Flyers for a well-run and really fun Fly-in.
