Introduction
I am a fan of airplane and space museums, and I have been to many of the great ones, all over the world. These include the Italian Historical Military Aircraft Museum near Rome, the British Imperial War Museum air unit at Duxford, and the Israeli Defense Forces Air Museum at Beersheba.
In the United States, I have been to a number of the great Air Museums, including the Smithsonian, the Air Force Museum at Dayton, the Naval Aviation Museum at Pensacola, the Tillamook Air Museum in Oregon, NASA Museums in Houston and Cape Kennedy and the Aircraft Carrier Museums Second Yorktown in Charleston and Midway in San Diego.
Locally, I have visited the Air and Space Museum in Balboa Park, Planes of Fame in Chino, the Palm Springs Air Museum, and our own March Field Air Museum in Riverside. I have signed up as a volunteer with the March Field Air Museum. Imagine working around 70 classic warbirds, with other people that love airplanes as much as you do!
I recently visited the Flying Leathernecks Museum at Marine Corps Air Station, Miramar, in San Diego. This is a relatively small museum, but they have some neat aircraft on display. There are many historical exhibits on the Marine Corps Air Arm, including the famous Wake Island, Midway and Guadalcanal air battles, and the infamous Pappy Boyington and his Black Sheep Squadron. Best of all, admission is free!
