World War I Scale Fun Fly
Hosted by: Gilman Springs Flyers
April 4, 2009
(Please note that these event reports were originally prepared for use in the Riverside RC Club monthly newsletter, Prop Talk, and are not intended to be comprehensive coverage of the event. Rather they are reports, for our club members, of my personal experiences and perceptions.)
The Gilman Springs Club held a WW I only Scale Fun Fly at their field on Saturday, April 04, 2009. The weather was nice, but a bit windy at times for some of those big box kites. The turnout was terrific, with 35 aircraft entered, some from as far away as Fresno. The planes varied from 1/6 to 1/3 scale, and from ARFs to scratch-built beauties. The donuts and hamburgers and chili were tasty, and the facility is great, with flushing toilets, running water and electricity, and loads of shade, work benches and starting benches.
I flew my Model Tech SE-5A fun scale ARF, with a Saito 56 and an Infinity 660 PCM radio. A number of RRCC members flew or were spectators. Prizes were awarded for Peoples Choice and three places of Scale. Most of the great WW I aircraft were there, including Fokker’s from the Eindecker through the Triplane to the D-VIII. There were Nieuports, Camels, and SE-5’s galore. However, I do not remember seeing a SPAD. This report will be mainly pictorial in nature.
