Event Report

Lake Hemet Fun Float-Fly

April 25/26, 2009

Hosted by the Hemet Model Masters

(Please note that these event reports were originally prepared for use in the Riverside RC Club monthly newsletter, Prop Talk, and are not intended to be comprehensive coverage of the event. Rather they are reports, for our club members, of my personal experiences and perceptions.)

I didn’t exactly attend this event, so this is a short report. I was a bit "burned out" on float flying after last weekend’s trip to Lake Casitas. To see the event report, (Click Here). But we had never been to Lake Hemet, so Doris and I decided to stop at the lake on Saturday, as float fly spectators, on our way down to San Diego to see the grandchildren.

Lake Hemet is along Route 74, about 25 miles east of Hemet. The following is extracted from Wikipedia, the free on-line encyclopedia:

"Lake Hemet is a water storage reservoir located in the San Jacinto Mountains in Riverside County, California, with a capacity of 260 billion US gallons (8,100 acre-feet, 1 km³) of water. It was created in 1895 with the construction of the Hemet Dam, and is owned and operated by the Lake Hemet Municipal Water District (LHMWD).

Lake Hemet is 4,340 ft (1,323 m) above sea level and has a surface area of 420 acres (1.7 km²) of water and 12 miles (19 km) of shoreline. Fishing is the primary attraction to the lake, which is stocked with rainbow trout, channel catfish, bluegill and Largemouth bass. Other Lake Hemet activities include boating, picnicking, hiking, and camping in the surrounding areas."

We got there at about 1:30 pm, and finally located the flying site at Camp 6. No-one was flying, but there was one forlorn-looking float plane on the beach. A float-flying friend who was just leaving told us that the event had been "blown away", by high winds. It looked like a pretty good flying site, so perhaps we will try the next event in the fall.
